Computer Vision, Sonar and Sensor fusion for Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) Navigation

چکیده
Even though a lot of research has been devoted towards AUVs in the West, the developing Eastern nations like India lack programs for development of AUV technologies that would better position them to understand their oceans. As such, the Indian Underwater Robotics Society started development of the first Indian AUV that would be portable and low cost while having widespread applications in academia, science, military, communication systems and public safety industries. The most important aspects of an AUV are its sensors, computer vision and sonar subsystems that assist its navigation. This paper presents some details on the sensor systems that were used in the AUV last year and also some of the developments that are in the pipeline for this year; including details on the patented computer vision system TOUCH and a passive sonar subsystem.

This paper aims is to design an integrated navigation system constituted by low-cost inertial sensors to estimate the orientation of an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) during all phases of under water and surface missions. The proposed approach relied on global positioning system, inertial measurement unit (accelerometer & rate gyro), magnetometer and complementary filter technique. Complem...
متن کاملA Feature Based Navigation System for an Autonomous Underwater Robot
We present a system for autonomous underwater navigation as implemented on a Nekton Ranger autonomous underwater vehicle, AUV. This is one of the rst implementations of a practical application for simultaneous localization and mapping on an AUV. Besides being an application of real-time SLAM, the implemtation demonstrates a novel data fusion solution where data from 7 sources are fused at di er...
متن کاملDevelopment of a Compact Hybrid Underwater Vehicle Using Variable Vector Propeller
This paper describes an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) with fuzzy controller and PID controller. Our AUV is compact and light in weight by employing variable vector (VARIVEC) propeller and compact controller. The AUV is autonomously controlled by utilizing the electronic compass, collision avoidance sonar, depth sensor and GPS receiver unit. A fuzzy controller and PID controller have desig...
متن کاملJBoost Optimization of Color Detectors for Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Navigation
In the world of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) the prominent form of sensing is sonar due to cloudy water conditions and dispersion of light. Although underwater conditions are highly suitable for sonar, this does not mean that optical sensors should be completely ignored. There are situations where visibility is high, such as in calm waters, and where light dispersion is not significant,...

This paper describes Jal, the new AUV designed by the student team of IURS for the purpose of shallow water survey, analysis and pipeline repair and monitoring operations. Propelled by two lateral and vertical propulsion thrusters, Jal weighs only about 7 Kg and measures close to 0.45 m in length and 0.36 m in width & height. Onboard sensor systems, custom passive sonar, real-time computer visi...
